NCV Numeracy Support Guide: Fractions to Functions

Core numeracy for NCV students: fractions and percentages, ratio, algebra, measurement and money maths.

Fractions, decimals, percentages

1/4 = 0.25 = 25%. Convert any percentage to a decimal by dividing by 100. Increase a value: multiply by (1 + r); decrease: multiply by (1 − r).

Ratio and proportion

Share R600 in the ratio 2 : 3 → 5 parts → R120 per part → R240 and R360. Scale a recipe or plan with cross-multiplication.

Basic algebra

Solve: 5x − 8 = 22 → 5x = 30 → x = 6. Use it in trade problems: cost per unit, area, materials.

Measurement and geometry

Perimeter = around the edge; area of a rectangle = l × b; triangle = ½ × b × h; circle = πr² (circumference = 2πr). Always convert to the same units first!

Money maths

Simple interest: I = P × r × t. Compound: A = P(1 + r)ᵗ. Compare loan offers by the total repayment, not the monthly amount alone.

Study plan

One section a day, do the worked examples WITHOUT looking, then check. Practise with real workshop and measurement problems from your course.
